The unique nature of an ocean sunrise—the way it moves and changes as the sun emerges—leads me to awe

There is a prayer tucked into this painting, one I often carry in my heart for myself and others, this idea that peace can reach us in unexpected places.

So often in life we feel clear about when we are going to feel joy/peace and when we will feel hardship/struggle. However, it isn’t always true. Sometimes we are in beautiful spaces, surrounded by people and feel totally alone. Sometimes our heart has been torn open or the ground has been shaken beneath us and we feel a sense of okay-ness that surpasses our circumstances.

I call this piece (part of a series) “Startled by Peace” I love the imagery of the unexpected— that you didn’t think peace was possible here, now— and yet here she is in all her glorious new dawn beauty.

May we be startled by peace, unexpected, unearned, unreasonable peace that allows our heart to feel joy.
